Worried About Meningitis? Everything Important You Need to Know

Meningitis vaccination expert 10/04/2026

Recent news reports about the serious outbreak of meningitis have spread worries and concern, especially, and understandably, among parents. With our pharmacists responding to increased queries about meningitis and general vaccination defence, this timely blog is designed to be a handy guide to understanding the risks, recognising symptoms, and simple steps to staying protected.

What is Meningitis?

Meningitis is a fast-developing viral or bacterial infection that causes inflammation of the protective membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can cause life-threatening sepsis and result in permanent damage to the brain or nerves.

Some forms, particularly bacterial meningitis, like the recent meningococcal group B (MenB) outbreak, can become serious very quickly, which is why early recognition and prompt medical attention are vital.

How Common is Meningitis?

Meningitis, including outbreaks or clusters like those recently reported in Kent, is relatively rare; for most people, the overall risk is low. Babies, young children, teenagers, and older adults are generally at higher risk of infection. Very serious if not treated quickly with targeted antibiotics, the good news is that a number of vaccinations offering protection against meningitis are now available.

Symptoms to Watch For:

  • High temperature / fever
  • Severe headache
  • A stiff neck
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Drowsiness or unresponsiveness
  • (In babies): high-pitched cry, refusing feeds, unusual floppiness or stiffness
A rash that doesn’t fade when pressed with a glass can be a sign, but importantly, not all cases involve a rash, and if present, it means the condition requires urgent treatment (999).

Meningitis can develop quickly, and swift attention is critical. Trust your instincts: use NHS 111 online or call 111 to check symptoms; 999 immediately if symptoms worsen.

Prevention: The Role of Vaccines

Meningitis vaccination is the most effective way to prevent meningitis and associated sepsis. Routine UK vaccination rollout began with the MenC vaccine in 1999. In 2015, the UK became the first country to introduce a nationwide infant MenB vaccination programme, and offer the MenACWY vaccine to teenagers to cover more strains. The MenB vaccine has already led to a 75% reduction in cases in vaccinated groups since its introduction.
